What Questions To Expect At A Fashion Interview

As we've established, the fashion industry is like no other, and its interview processes are no exception. Whenever I got an interview I often found myself trying to memorize answers to traditional questions like "What are your strengths and weaknesses" and I never got asked those usual ones.

I was always caught off guard when an interviewer would ask questions pertaining to my interests, my internal dialogue would go a little something like *wait that wasn't a part of the script in my head on how this would go!* Luckily, I've been on enough interviews now to know what to expect so I've listed below some of the questions I've been asked on fashion interviews and how you should approach your answer.

"Who is your favorite designer?"

This one is a no-brainer. Obviously if you're trying to get into this industry you're going to have a favorite designer who immediately comes to mind. To ensure that you sound confident and knowledgeable, brush up on Designers 101 and make sure you know the designer behind the label. That means please don't say Balmain when you mean Olivier Rousteing or Gucci when you mean Alessandro Michele .

“Why do you want to work in fashion?/ "What does fashion mean to you?" "

Have a genuine, concise answer prepared for this one. Interviewers can smell BS a mile away.

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

This one you will hear on a lot of different interviews. Make sure that your 5 year plan alludes to you growing within the industry, this isn't the time to reveal your plan to pursue your dream of becoming a chef. There's absolutely nothing wrong with pursuing other passions, I'm all for that, but just not on this interview.

"What are some current fashion trends?"

Fashion never stops, it's constantly changing and it's crucial to show that that you make an effort to stay up to date on what's current in the streets, magazines, bloggers, and all other sources that influence trends. You don't have to follow these trends, you just have to be aware of what's hot and what's not.

"What do you know about our products?"

This is for the interviewer to gauge how much you actually know about the company you're applying for and that you're not applying just because. No one wants to hire someone who's not enthusiastic about making their company successful.

PS. One final thing, ALWAYS send a hand-written thank you note post-interview . I promise you it makes a huge difference and will make you stand out in their mind because think of how surprised you are when you receive something done by hand these days. It's the quickest, easiest way to go the extra mile.
